(Read in PDF Format)

Here’s why it’s IMPORTANT that you prepare for and vote in your Municipal Elections — elections for Mayor, County Council and School Board Members.
- When turnout is low: Results are less representative of income, age, and ethnicity of the community.
- Local elections have a major impact on your community and daily life.
- The amount you pay in property taxes or rent.
- Where housing, schools, and playgrounds are built.
- Where your city sets its priorities.

Statistics about voters in local elections (the following information can be found here.)
- Affluent voters have 30-50 percent higher turnout in local elections than low-income voters.
- Those 65+ are seven times more likely to vote in local elections than voters aged 18-34.
- White voter turnout is 20 percent higher in local elections than non-white voters.
How do these statistics impact YOU?
- Local elected officials and policy are disproportionately influenced by older affluent white voters
- Our representative democracy and the effectiveness of local governments is undermined.
- Recent research found that less representative elections contribute to poorer outcomes for minorities, including uneven prioritization of public spending.
