Find your SC Legislators.

ACTION 1: Thanks to everyone who contacted their Legislators and spoke out about S.323. This is what democracy looks like!
Wonderful news: S.323 did NOT advance out of the Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee!!
This outcome reflects what South Carolinians have made clear again and again: We value personal autonomy, access to healthcare, and the freedom to make private decisions without government interference.
Thank you to every person who stayed engaged – those who called, emailed, submitted testimony, attended hearings, or helped others understand what was at stake. Your participation matters, and today is proof of that.
While this is an important step in the right direction, we know the conversation isn’t over. We will continue to monitor legislation, keep voters informed, and advocate for policies that protect civil liberties and uphold democratic values.
Thank you for showing up for your communities and for one another.
ACTION 2: LWV Charleston Joins LWVUS Federal Lawsuit Against Ban on Nonpartisan Voter Registration Work

LWV Charleston Area is suing the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, the US Department of Homeland Security, and other federal officials for enacting — without following the required process — a new rule that bars nonpartisan civic engagement groups from providing voter registration and civic engagement at administrative naturalization ceremonies.

ACTION 3: Read “Ignoring the Middle: Legislative Disconnect With South Carolina Public Opinion,” article by LWV Charleston area. ASK YOUR LEGISLATORS WHY?
“The SC legislature is passing legislation that clear majorities of the South Carolina public, as reflected in these polls, do not favor and likely would not vote for if they had an opportunity through issue referenda. This disconnect applies to issues such as abortion restrictions, background checks for gun purchases, the age to purchase types of weapons, medical marijuana, and providing a full and accurate account of how racial discrimination shapes South Carolina history. When a representative sample of the South Carolina public is directly asked to share their opinions about issues, we can see these opinions do not match the content of the bills and regulations that are passing through the SC legislature and being endorsed by the governor. There is middle ground in South Carolina, but it is being ignored.”

ACTION 6: READ League of Women Voters Statement on President Trump’s Claims that Lawmakers' Dissent Equals 'Seditious Behavior'
“The President’s suggestion that lawmakers should face death for upholding the rule of law is not political rhetoric — it’s an authoritarian threat that shatters every democratic norm. No leader in a functioning democracy invokes death as punishment for dissent. Doing so endangers our institutions, our public servants, and the foundations of democratic governance.
"At a moment when Americans need real solutions to the growing crises impacting their lives, the President is choosing violent intimidation over governing.” —LWVUS
Read the full statement. You can contact your lawmakers and ask how they feel about facing death if they disagree with the President.
