Action Alert: Pickens County Library and Censorship

Attend the Pickens County Council meeting
October 2, 2023 at 6:30 pm
Auditorium, County Administration Facility
222 McDaniel Avenue, Pickens SC 29671

The Pickens County Council has recently come under pressure to pass an ordinance that would strip the Library Director of their primary duty, to carry out the day-to-day activities and operations of running the Library, and require the Library Board to approve all books, movies, and events/programs. This pressure is in service of those who wish to censor books and programs available to the entire community.

Libraries play an essential, non-partisan role in providing the information that allows citizens to make informed decisions. Libraries make a difference. Libraries transform lives. The Library’s collection should reflect the diversity of the population served rather than the narrow demands of a small group. To ensure the best library service, the Director must be allowed to manage the Library without inappropriate Library Board or County Council interference.

The LWVOP invites you to attend the Pickens County Council meeting on Oct 2, 2023 at 6:30pm located in the Auditorium, County Administration Facility 222 McDaniel Avenue, Pickens SC 29671. Come and show your support as our local League continues to work to defend the freedom to read as we deliver a prepared joint statement in support of intellectual freedom and good governance.
