Mary Ann Shadd Cary

Wilmington Post Office renamed in honor of anti-slavery activist  — and a Delaware native.

Now, Delaware’s Congressional delegation has honored the Wilmington-born activist by renaming the Wilmington Post office in her honor. Read more from the Wilmington Post, August 31, 2021

gwendolyn  A message from our President, Gwendolyn Miller

Good Morning All,

I am rethinking how and what we present to our members regarding DEI. We do not provide enough learning opportunities for our members, such as content books, articles, videos, and workshops on DEI topics.

As I look through the LWVUS website, I hope to model their resources pages, webinar engagements on various topics, and much more. I would appreciate your input on what, how, and where we can share this information with our members on our social media platforms.

Your comments, ideas, and suggestions are welcome.

Here are a few examples:
      • Being Color Brave, Mellody Hobson. The subject of race can be very touchy. As finance executive Mellody Hobson says, it's a "conversational third rail." But, she says, that's exactly why we need to start talking about it. In this engaging, persuasive talk, Hobson makes the case that speaking openly about race — and particularly about diversity in hiring -- makes for better businesses and a better society. This talk was presented at an official TED conference and was featured by our editors on the home page.
      • Every Day Bias, A book by Howard J. Ross. To be human is to be biased. From this simple truth, nationally recognized diversity expert Howard J. Ross explores the biases we each carry within us.
      • Diversity and Authenticity, an article written by Kathrine W. Phillips, Tracy L. Dumas, & Nancy P. Rutherbard. Minorities hesitate to share information about themselves at work. That’s a problem for everyone.
