Members of the Volusia County League of Women Voters Natural Resources Team volunteered for the 38th International Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 16, 2023. The weather was perfect - sunny, breezy and not too terribly hot. NRT members met at two parks: Mary McLeod Bethune Beach in New Smyrna Beach and Michael Crotty Bicentennial Park in Ormond Beach. We had a great turnout and looked spiffy in our new LWV T-shirts made especially for this occasion. Thank you to Saralee Morrisey for purchasing the shirts for this event and to everyone who made it possible to have them designed, approved, printed and delivered in TWO WEEKS! We have more shirts available for purchase. Below is a photo of the back of the T-shirt as well as photos of the cleanup gang. Hopefully we will also get a plug in The Observer. Pattie had the opportunity to speak with a reporter. You may think that some of the buckets don’t seem to have that much trash, but it is because most of the trash is microplastics – tiny pieces of plastic that are usually the result of the breakdown of larger plastics. One volunteer logged what she collected on the app Clean Swell: in 1 hour she covered 1/3 mile and collected 250 pieces of trash, of which 141 were small pieces of plastic and 54 were cigarette butts.
