What Is the League of Women Voters' Mission?

The League of Women Voters of Volusia County (LWVVC) is a nonpartisan political organization that works to encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy.

The League does not support or endorse any political party or candidate (see our Nonpartisan Policy), but we are political. The League does take positions on selected issues that we study and discuss. When we have reached agreement on an issue, we take action to effect change. Our goal is to empower citizens to shape better communities. Read our PDF icon Bylaws (updated May 2019).

The League in Action Today:
Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy

The League of Women Voters is a grassroots, non-partisan organization that has fought since 1920 to improve our government and engage all Americans in the decisions that impact their lives. For 100 years, our central mission has been to educate and prepare citizens to cast an informed ballot and to protect our democratic principles. As a non-partisan political organization, LWVVC works to encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy.

We serve the community in the following ways:

  • Voter Service: Prior to elections, we moderate candidate debates and forums as requested by local organizations. See Fact Sheet for Candidates Forums. Our team also produces a voter guide that is available in hard copy as well as electronically at Vote411.org
  • Voter Registration: LWVVC members go to meetings, events, and schools to register voters and provide non-partisan information regarding voting.
  • Citizen Information: Before elections, we provide speakers to explain the pros and cons of ballot issues such as proposed constitutional revisions.
  • Community Partnerships: Our action teams partner with other non-partisan organizations to host educational community activities such as local festivals, symposiums and informational programs.
  • Outside Organizations' Elections: As a non-partisan organization, the LWVVC is available to manage outside organizations' elections.
  • Educational Programs: LWVVC offers monthly programs with expert speakers who provide educational presentations on important issues. Check our calendar for upcoming events. Programs are open to the public.
  • Observer Corps: Our LWVVC Observer Corps Volunteers attend local governmental meetings to observe and report happenings to the League. See LWVVC Observer Corps Code and the LWVUS Resource Guide for more information. If you wish to learn more or to volunteer, contact Observer Corps Team Leader Ann Harrell. You may contact Ann by emailing mail [at] lwvvc.org, and it will be sent to Ann, who will get in touch with you. We are there to assure that voter concerns are being addressed.
  • Speakers Bureau: The LWVVC can provide speakers on the various subjects studied by the LWVVC or on voter issues in general. For more information, email us at mail [at] lwvvc.org.

We operate at the national, state and local levels through more than 800 state and local Leagues, in all 50 states as well in DC, the Virgin Islands and Hong Kong. The LWVVC tackles issues at all three levels of government. In recent years, League members have delved into these concerns and arrived at positions.

Your participation in League will expose you to a breadth of experiences and issues that will not only inform you but create greater possibilities for civic engagement than you might imagine. You can spend as much or as little time as you wish. Whether you aspire to leadership or are keen to follow the lead of experienced members, the League will excite, use, and nurture your civic curiosity, ideals, or desire for action. We offer our members webinars, conference calls, workshops, other events and mentorship opportunities throughout the year, at the local, regional, state and national levels.
