Program Description: The Eleventh Judicial Circuit in Miami-Dade County has established a court based jail diversion program to channel individuals with serious mental illness from the criminal justice system to treatment and support services. Collaboration among diverse community stakeholders including police, courts, corrections and mental health treatment providers has reduced jail commitments and reliance on emergency rooms in favor of community based services. Cindy Schwartz will discuss the diversion program development and evolution over its 20 year history, including it’s challenges and successes.
