The League of Women Voters of Connecticut (LWVCT) along with Connecticut Public (CT Public) presents a weekly series of political debates between the key candidates in advance of the midterm November 2022 elections, including debates for the statewide offices of Governor and Secretary of the State, as well as U.S. Senate and Connecticut’s five U.S. Congressional districts.

In recent election cycles, we have noticed an alarming trend among candidates from both parties—a reluctance by some to participate in debates. This is unfortunate. Debates are an important part of the elections process. Our democracy depends on a mutual relationship of respect between candidates and the voters who elect them.

The LWV Greenwich and Greenwich Academy invite you to join us for our 7th Community Case Discussion: A Nation Divided: The Challenge of Secession. All participants - adults and students - will be expected to read and prepare the Harvard Business School case on secession and come ready to discuss and debate it. The case, along with questions to guide your reading, will be sent to you when you register. Space is limited so please sign up early. The deadline to register is November 7th.
It wasn’t that long ago, that during election season, candidates eagerly awaited being invited to a League of Women Voters of Connecticut debate. This is the first time we have encountered so much opposition by the parties, and (some) candidates to participate in our debates or control how we run them. Something has changed, but it is not the League. The League will continue to educate voters by using all of our voter education tools: printed materials, online and social media platforms as well as debates to bring voters non-partisan information about the candidates and the issues. Did you know that Connecticut is one of only 6 states with only one day of in-person voting? The busy citizens of Connecticut deserve more time to vote in-person, not just the 14 hours on Election Day.
Tonight’s Secretary of the State Debate at the University of Hartford and Thursday’s 5th Congressional Debate at Central Connecticut State University will bring the Connecticut Public and the League of Women Voters of Connecticut (LWVCT) 2022 debate series to a close. U.S. Senate and Gubernatorial Debates Canceled Due to Candidate Non-Participation
This Election Day—November 8, 2022—Connecticut voters have the power to make early voting possible in future elections. Right now, Connecticut is one of only four states that do not offer early, in-person voting for all eligible voters; however, if this amendment passes, the legislature will be able to change that.
This question will be on the ballot: “Shall the Constitution of the State be amended to permit the General Assembly to provide for early voting?” Bringing early voting to Connecticut is a practical way to improve access to the democratic process for everyone.
