The League Observer Corps monitors local government bodies for information of importance to the League and to our communities. Observing is a vital aspect of our civic engagement mission. It matters when a citizen identified as an Observer is at these government meetings.
More than 20 of our members have been certified by LWVIL as League Observers, yet few have actually "observed" a community entity as a result of the pandemic. Because newspapers do not shed light on these meetings, we need and will foster good qualified people. We're having a Observer Refresher workshop Wednesday, June 15, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wheaton Library. cathfran51 [at] gmail.com (RSVP to Catherine Franczyk for this workshop.)
We're inviting the members who have been trained, or anyone who's interested, to attend this workshop to grow a more robust Observer Corps. We'll
- Review the main points of Observer training.
- Discuss the different local government agencies
- Boards and Commissions
- School Boards
- Du Page County Board
- Park Districts
- Library Boards
- Townships
- Hold a question and answer session
- Verify Observer certificates
- Provide a list of some governmental meeting dates (many meetings may be attended virtually)
- Discuss the procedure to get started as an Observer
If you're interested in becoming a trained observer before the June 15 workshop, please register for the virtual LWVIL Observer training June 9 at 7 p.m.
