How Democracies Die by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt. This book is read in many other LWV Book Clubs nationally and follows along with the theme heard in the October Forum about polarization. The authors posit in the Introduction that extreme polarization can kill democracies.
Perhaps most telling was the end of the Introduction, where the authors write:
"We must be aware of the fateful missteps that have wrecked other democracies. And we must see how citizens have risen to meet the great democratic crises of the past, overcoming their own deep seated divisions to avert breakdown. History doesn't repeat itself. But it rhymes. The promise of history, and the hope of this book, is that we can find the rhymes before it is too late."
LWVLA Book Club is open to all - members and nonmembers alike - and is conducted via Zoom. If you're interested in joining the book discussion on December 8th, contact mbclark112 [at] gmail.com for the Zoom link.
