LWVSA Civics Contest A Hit

Kate Telis, Spokane Youth Votes

On May 3, 2021, LWVSA partnered with Spokane Public Schools to host a Jeopardy-style Civics Contest for local high school seniors.

In the first of what will be a semi-annual event, teams from Shadle Park and North Central High Schools competed for cash prizes and bragging rights.  Questions were formulated from two civics textbooks by the League's Spokane Youth Votes committee and student ambassadors: Sophie Avery, Rosie Zhou, and Summer Sandstrom, along with League members Kate Telis, Dawn Bayman, Sylvia Oliver, and Beth Pellicciotti.  Special thanks goes to Susie Gerard, Coordinator of Social Studies Instruction at SPS for her guidance throughout this exciting pilot program.

Members from LWVSA as well as other Leagues were able to attend and silently played along.  It was a close competition with very impressive contestants. Congrats to the winners from North Central High School: Konner Frandsen, Andrew Lubben, and Coltan Schons, and their civics teacher, Jonathan Knight.
