Jim Irizarry

Jim Irizarry is currently the Assistant Chief Elections Officer and Assistant Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder for San Mateo County. He has over 27 years of public-sector experience and has served as Assistant Chief Elections Officer since 2013.

As the Assistant to Mark Church, the County’s Chief Elections Officer and Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder, Jim played an instrumental role in implementing San Mateo County’s historic All-Mailed Ballot Election in 2015, California’s first countywide local consolidated election, which led to the passage of the California Voter’s Choice Act in 2018. San Mateo County was one of five pioneering counties in California to conduct elections under the new law; Jim played a vital role in implementing this landmark legislation in San Mateo County.

The California Voter’s Choice Act has been a complete success, increasing voter turnout for all voters, particularly for voters with disabilities, youth, and language minorities. With the completion of the September 14, 2021, California Gubernatorial Recall Election, San Mateo County has held six elections under the Voter’s Choice Act, making it a leader in California Vote-by-Mail elections.
