LWVNCC Scholarships

In the summer of 2023, the League of Women Voters of New Castle County announced an academic scholarship program in the name of Joann Hasse, a longtime League member and advocate who died that spring. Hasse served as League President at both the New Castle County and State level for multiple terms over the years, and was honored by the Delaware State General Assembly for her advocacy work. Joann was a friend and mentor to many in the League and will be sorely missed.

The Joann D. Hasse Memorial Scholarship is planned as a $2,500 annual merit-based sum awarded to a Delaware college student or high school senior who provides a winning one-page essay on "Citizenship." Application will be open to any student pursuing an undergraduate college degree in Delaware. The first award may be ready for the 2024-25 academic year and the application form will be made available here on the LWVNCC website and via the guidance offices at Delaware high schools nearer when it is ready.

A lifelong learner, Joann often mentioned that she attended "the university of LWV" — crediting her League of Women Voters involvement with sparking her extensive self-education regarding social issues and government. A retired nursing professional, Joann served as Chair of the Health Care Portfolio for the League of Women Voters of Delaware Advocacy Corps for many years.
