LWVNCC Scholarships

LWVNCC Annual Scholarships 2026

Now Accepting Applications for 4 awards of $1,000 each. This scholarship is open to any NCC high school graduating senior, or a currently-enrolled fulltime college student or student in a tuitioned vocational program. Applicant’s home residence must be in New Castle County, Delaware.

Application instructions:
  1. Review all three of these documents: PDF icon Application Form, PDF icon Essay or Video Prompts, and PDF icon Grading Rubric.
  2. Download and fill out the Application Form.
  3. Complete the Essay or Video following the one of the provided prompts.
  4. Combine all of the following into a single compressed, zipped folder (.zip file) and email it to scholarship.lwvncc [at] gmail.com. Include your name on the subject line, (e.g. "2026 Scholarship submission S.Wilson"), and all the file names you submit: 
    → Your completed application form. 
    → Your essay or video file. Ensure that your file name includes your name and submission type (e.g., S_Wilson_Essay.pdf or S_Wilson_Video.mp4
    → A photo of your driver's license or other ID showing Proof of NCC Residence.
    → A copy of your most recent Transcript (school grades).
  5. Ask two non-related adults to provide Recommendations for you using this form: LWVNCC Recommendation Letter Submission Form.
Applications must be received by 5 pm on April 1, 2026. Late or incomplete submissions will not be reviewed.

Joann D. Hasse Nursing Scholarship

In the summer of 2023, the League of Women Voters of New Castle County announced an academic scholarship program in the name of Joann Hasse, a longtime League member and advocate who died that spring. Hasse served as League President at both the New Castle County and State level for multiple terms over the years, and was honored by the Delaware State General Assembly for her advocacy work. Joann was a friend and mentor to many in the League and will be sorely missed.

The Joann D. Hasse League of Women Voters of New Castle County Scholarship is administered by the University of Delaware and will be awarded annually to a U.D. nursing student in their junior or senior year on the basis of merit and financial need. Preference will be given to students from New Castle County, but will be extended state-wide if no suitable NCC recipient is located each year.

A lifelong learner, Joann often mentioned that she attended "the university of LWV" — crediting her League of Women Voters involvement with sparking her extensive self-education regarding social issues and government. A retired nursing professional, Joann served as Chair of the Health Care Portfolio for the League of Women Voters of Delaware Advocacy Corps for many years.
