An exclusive LWVVC fundraising event, Ladies Taking Liberty, will debut at the Athens Theatre with three performances only, and feature a kickoff re-enactment Suffragist March on Opening Night. Tickets are on sale now >>

Ladies Taking Liberty celebrates the 101st Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment. The show explores the history of suffrage, from Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony to Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul, from Sojourner Truth to America’s young poet-laureate, Amanda Gorman. It commemorates the work and achievements of the many, sung and unsung, through theatrical vignettes, storytelling, song, and poetry. Historic images, documents, and the spoken word will shed light on the long road to equality. The show concludes with a glimpse from then to now, highlighting how voting rights must not be taken for granted.

This original stageplay by Deborah McShane is being produced by long-time LWVVC member Suze Peace, who shares her unique origin story. "The play is dedicated to my grandmother, Ernestine Cady Perry, and my mother, Priscilla Perry Sprunt. Ernestine's father, Wesley Cady, was a cousin of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who along with Susan B. Anthony, was an early champion of women's rights, finally culminating in the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution guaranteeing women the right to vote. It was Ernestine who advised me in my 20's to join the League of Women Voters and I have been a member ever since. A portion of the play's proceeds will be donated to our League of Women Voters of Volusia County."

The Athens requires mask use within the Theatre, throughout all performances.
