The League of Women Voters of Volusia County is concerned about the consequences of development throughout the region. These positions promote sustainable community development* and address the goals and processes of comprehensive planning and require coordination among the governments of Volusia County.

In order to preserve the quality of life in Volusia County:

LWVVC supports Volusia County and the municipalities within its borders working together to protect the environment while providing reasonable use of the land and restricting the use of wetland mitigation.

LWVVC supports protecting environmentally sensitive land and water bodies, such as through buffering, conservation easements and public ownership.

LWVVC encourages developing open, recreational, and green spaces to enhance and maintain the quality of life within the county and its municipalities.

LWVVC supports the conservation of our natural habitats which support endangered and threatened species, natural lands, wetlands and water recharge areas in Volusia County.

LWVVC supports increased consideration to potable water issues, including the assurance of clean water, in the Comprehensive Plans of Volusia County and its municipalities.

LWVVC supports development of effective drainage systems to improve recharge and retention areas and reduce flooding in Volusia County and its municipalities.

LWVVC supports reducing dependency on septic systems and efforts to provide sanitary sewer service especially within our natural springs basins and near the Indian and Halifax Rivers.

LWVVC encourages Volusia County and its municipalities to work together to direct regional growth in a responsible manner through interlocal agreements and establishing specific cooperative/collaborative agencies such as through the charter and the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council.

LWVVC supports measures to ensure that any comprehensive plan amendment or rezoning that permits increased residential density may be approved only if adequate public schools can be timely planned and constructed to serve the projected increase in student population.

LWVVC supports efforts to advance resilience* strategies that strengthen and protect the built infrastructure and natural environment, enhance health and equity, and ensure a prosperous economy for all.
* Definitions *
Resilience: the ability of individuals and communities to plan, sustain, adapt, recover, improve and grow collaboratively, regardless what kind of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience, through specific actions and implementation strategies geared to address specific vulnerabilities.
Sustainable community development: A process of anticipating and accommodating the needs of current and future generations that reproduces and balances local social, economic, and ecological systems, and links local actions to global concerns.
