August finished in a purple haze – literally, as the new County administration building was lit up in purple and gold for the celebration of the 19th Amendment centennial and despite the smoke, Ann Flynn ventured out to capture this photo.

Now onwards into September and a full month of election activities, meetings, volunteer opportunities and more! (Here is the PDF of this issue.)

First, the meetings:

• Action/Advocacy Committee meets this Saturday, September 5 – you should have seen an email, but if not, check the announcement and be sure to email for a meeting link!

Since people rely on the League for solid information, we have not one but two meetings this month to provide just that – one is advocacy, the other is impartial voter information:

• On Wednesday, September 16, LWVDV is hosting a panel about Proposition 15 (Schools and Communities First) with some top-level guests. Invite anyone who still has questions about why they should vote for this measure!
• On Thursday, September 24, join LWVDV and the Contra Costa Library for “2020: Your Roadmap to Voting” as a panel of experts covers the twists and turns of casting a vote in this unusual year.

And something else for the calendar:

• If you’re a new member or just want a refresher, there’s a New Member Orientation on Saturday, September 12 that covers the basics of League and membership, plus some extras. Meet some Board members and other new or prospective members!

And there is still so much more to do!

• Want some “hands-on” activity? Both the President’s Letter and Martha’s Voter Services article have lots of ideas for helping with all those voter engagement activities, from registration to helping with voting procedures. Pick your favorite, or two, and dive in!
• Stay informed on local issues with the always lively Lafayette observer report and on statewide issues with Pat Snyder’s update on the first report from the Healthy California for All Commission. Stay informed on League Board activities with the Board Briefs now attached to the August Board meeting announcement on our webpage.
• There’s a brief article in the PDF of the Voter, and more details coming in an email later this week, about how you can support the LWVDV’s venture into creating videos of our Pros and Cons presentations. You don’t have to be an expert to help out this effort!
• Finally, another celebration, this one involving the Constitution and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. As described in the PDF of the Voter, the National Constitution Center will honor her with its Liberty Medal and a special video tribute in words and music, broadcast live on Constitution Day, Thursday, September 17, 2020, at 6:30 p.m. EDT (3:30 pm PST). Please mark your calendar now!

And as we prepare for this election, remember these words from Virginia Kase, CEO of LWV US: The suffrage leaders worked through a pandemic to win us this right. A century later, we work through a pandemic to exercise it. Celebrate them in this 100th year and in every election.
