[MADISON, Wis.] - Today, the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition held a socially-distanced rally at the state capitol to celebrate the anticipation of the introduction of nonpartisan and transparent redistricting legislation.
“For too long, Wisconsin legislators have rigged maps in order to maintain the power of their political party, and today, Wisconsinites demonstrated their strong support for a nonpartisan, transparent redistricting process,” said Debra Cronmiller, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin. “The time is now the end gerrymandering; voters should choose their legislators, not the other way around.”
The main sponsors of the redistricting legislation, State Senator Jeff Smith and State Assembly Representative Deb Andraca, joined the coalition and Wisconsinites at the rally. Other speakers included Devin Anderson from the African-American Roundtable, Matthew Rothschild from the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, Sachin Chheda from the Fair Elections Project and other leaders in the redistricting reform movement.
Rothschild spoke about the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition’s work, and the importance and urgency of passing legislation in the state legislature this year.
“Passing this legislation is something we can do now to ensure representation for the next 10 years and beyond,” Rothschild said
