The premier introduction and promotion LWV Charlotte Mecklenburg’s newly adopted policy of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), is the focus of the September 29 ZOOM League Talk. TEMA OKUN, PhD., is the featured speaker for the event, scheduled for 6:30-8:00 pm and open to all League Members and members of the public.
Dr. Okun, whose focus is on issues of racial justice and equity, is a nationally recognized trainer, facilitator, author, and coach with 30 plus years of experience working with/for organizations, schools, and community-based institutions. Currently, she works with the Teach. Equity. Now collaborative housed at the Teaching for Equity Fellows program offered at Duke University-Durham NC and Spartanburg SC.
The multi-faceted Dr. Okun, who resides in Hillsborough, NC, is also an artist and poet. She authored the 2010 award-winning “The Emperor Has No Clothes: Teaching about Race and Racism to People Who Don’t Want to Know” and the widely acclaimed article: “White Supremacy Culture,” the revised version of which can be seen on her website: www.whitesupremacyculture.info
Dr. Okun, speaking at our first League Talk of the year will provide a not to be missed experiential occasion. Coupled with her talk on “White Supremacy, Racism, and the Stake White People Have in Racial Justice," she will lead attendees in a group exploration of the systemic racial injustice so pervasive in our culture today with group break-outs, and a lively question and answer opportunity.
