The League of Women Voters has championed government transparency since its inception. Our founding principles included statements on the citizen’s right to know. U.S. laws pertaining to public access will only be as good as we demand them to be. Along with Voter Services and our County Board of Elections Monitoring Project, our Observer Corps is one of the most visible ways to demonstrate the League’s non-partisanship and trustworthiness.
Observer Corps members attend meetings as League members, monitor processes and protocols, evaluate meeting content vs. LWV priorities or positions, and share observations and concerns with League leaders as necessary.
Our Observer Corps:
- Ensures citizens are aware of decisions that impact their lives.
- Promotes government transparency and accountability.
- Monitors what issues are being discussed and how they are being discussed.
What meetings can I monitor?
Council meetings, board meetings, board of commissioner meetings, and advisory committee meetings in your area! Think city council, county commissioners, board of education, planning boards, and more.
Observer Corps are primarily run at the local level (find your local League in North Carolina) and bring concerns or opportunities for advocacy to their local League board. Any issues of concern that bubble up to the level of statewide concern can be discussed at the periodic meetings or brought to the attention of the state board for the same purpose.
LWVNC Observer Corps Periodic Meetings
The LWVNC Board will host periodic (quarterly) Observer Corps meetings to allow observers across the state to share concerns and learn from each other.
