LWVWI Statement: Decision on Prohibiting Witness Certificate Corrections
MADISON, WI–Today, the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin’s executive director, Debra Cronmiller, issued the following statement in response to the White vs. WEC decision to prevent clerks from filling in incomplete addresses on witness certificates.
“The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin is very disappointed for Wisconsin absentee voters regarding this decision.
“In Wisconsin, absentee voters are required to complete their ballot in front of a witness, who will then include their address on the witness certificate.
“Now, if the witness makes an unintentional mistake on the certificate, our helpful clerks are no longer able to make these minor corrections.
“The League advises that all absentee voters follow directions very thoroughly when voting and double-check the witness certificate before returning their ballot to the clerk to ensure that their voice is heard.
