MADISON, WI- LWVWI published its 2021-2022 Spring Elections Post-Election Report with information and recommendations to inform future Get Out The Vote (GOTV) and advocacy efforts to increase turnout in spring elections.
Spring elections are some of the least publicized elections in Wisconsin. Despite traditionally low voter turnout, they are just as important as higher-profile fall elections. The report pays attention to these elections to understand voting habits and the barriers voters face.
For years, the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin has trained election observers around the state. This report brings together data from League observers, responses to the League’s voter experience survey, reflections from voting rights advocates, and publicly available data provided by the Wisconsin Elections and Wisconsin Ethics Commissions.
The report analyzes the impact of changes to election laws, district maps, and voting habits since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic among other issues pertinent to Spring Elections in Wisconsin.
“No election is perfect, but overall these elections were run smoothly and securely,” said Eileen Newcomer, LWVWI Voter Education Manager. “Our hope is that these recommendations can help improve our elections so all voters have the ability and desire to vote in future elections.”
The report includes recommendations on:
- Voter Turnout
- Candidate Information
- Uncontested Races
- Accessibility
- Campaign Finance
- Special Election Timeline
- Redistricting and Redirections
