Greetings to my fellow Leaguers –

Happy belated New Year! I hope all of you had a beautiful and restful holiday time. Welcome to 2023! We are still moving and shaking on many fronts.

Things to look for:
1. LWVNC Convention Registration: Everyone received information before the holidays about our upcoming 2023 convention. We will be sending more information in the coming weeks. You can reserve your hotel room now. Lots of materials will be coming your way. One exciting thing we are doing is having all of our Leagues make a "Brag Board" – pictures, articles, etc. of all the AMAZING things your Leagues have been doing. We want to display these around the convention room. It will be so interesting to see what everyone has been doing. You may feel inspired by other Leagues and be able to talk to fellow Leaguers about their involvement.

2. We will be using the member listing you completed by Jan. 31 for the number of delegates for the convention, so make sure your roster is complete.

3. Thanks to those Leagues who are continuing with VOTE411 – it's a most valuable tool for your Leagues and your communities.

4. We will continue to send you updates regarding what is happening in our state legislature. The Supreme Court will give us information on Moore v. Harper in June; until then, we'll send notes on how this will affect you and your communities if it is not overturned. North Carolina lawmakers have appealed the ruling to the Supreme Court, putting forward a dangerous theory known as the "Independent State Legislature Theory," or ISLT, which argues that state legislatures have unconditional power to legislate on election issues and cannot be reviewed by any established checks and balances, like a governor's veto or a state court's ruling. If this theory, which has been rejected repeatedly by the U.S. Supreme Court, is accepted by the current court, state legislatures could have unchecked power to control elections in the state. We must watch carefully and be prepared to move forward. Let's not let our legislature take control of everything without checks and balances! More information will come.

Remember, we are committed to moving forward with defending democracy and empowering our voters.

In League,
Jo
