League of Women Voters Advocacy and Action is the League's organized efforts to influence public policy and legislation in line with its officially adopted positions—essentially translating the League's stance on issues into real-world change.
What it is: Advocacy and Action is the branch of League activity where the organization moves beyond education and voter services to actively engage with government and policymakers to shape laws, regulations, and public policy.
Core Activities include:
- Legislative Lobbying: League representatives meet with elected officials, testify at hearings, and communicate with legislators at the local, state, and federal levels to advocate for or against specific legislation.
- Public Policy Statements: issuing formal statements, letters, and op-eds urging action or expressing the League's position on pending legislation or policy decisions.
- Legal Action: filing amicus briefs or joining lawsuits on issues such as voting rights, redistricting, or campaign finance, where the League has established positions.
- Coalition Building: partnering with other organizations that share common policy goals to amplify the League's advocacy efforts.
- Grassroots Action: mobilizing League members to contact their representatives, attend public meetings, or participate in advocacy campaigns.
- Redistricting & Election Reform: actively advocating for fair redistricting processes and election administration reforms, which are historically central League concerns.
Guiding Principles:
- Advocacy must always be grounded in an officially adopted League position— the League does not act on issues outside its established positions, no matter how timely or popular.
- All advocacy remains strictly nonpartisan— the League never endorses candidates or political parties, only policies.
- Actions must reflect member consensus, not the views of individual leaders or staff.

Distinction from Voter Services: Voter Services empowers citizens to participate in democracy, while Advocacy and Action engages government and institutions directly to effect policy change.
Distinction from Study/Positions work: Positions define where the League stands, while Advocacy and Action is what the League does about it.
In summary, the League of Women Voters Advocacy and Action is the organization's structured, position-based, nonpartisan effort to directly influence public policy through lobbying, legal engagement, coalition work, and member mobilization—always in service of its core democratic values.
