Nearly 9,000 hours! That’s the number of volunteer hours LWV members in North Carolina racked up in support of our mission last year. And we reached more than 450,000 people with our messages about voting and other important issues! Those numbers represent a tremendous amount of work, and I’m grateful for every volunteer and every hour each of you committed to defending democracy and empowering voters!

We’ve been working hard as a state Board to provide you with tools to make those volunteer hours easier. Our regional meetings (more on the western regional meeting below) and the recent Power the South gathering provided us with opportunities to hear about what resources we could provide to enhance your programs.

As a result, new GOTV tools were developed for use by Leagues for the primary, and those materials are being updated for the general election in November. Voter information about new procedures and voting requirements help to inform North Carolinians about how they can “Vote. And Make Sure Your Vote Counts.” We also updated our video: “What Happens After You Vote?” You can view the video here.

We have also created a new member recruitment flyer in response to requests for a general piece that can be tailored to your League and be a useful handout at events where we might encounter potential new members. And we updated our Voter Registration Training video for this year’s new voter registration forms.

Many of these resources are possible because of funding provided by our friends, members, and supporters. Thank you to everyone who donated to LWVNC during 2023. One very generous anonymous donor contributed $40,000, and those funds continue to be invested in support of local League GOTV resources. We appreciate every dime that has come our way, and we thank our supporters for their continued faith in our work.

We will be holding our last regional meeting, the western region, on April 27 in Hickory. The meeting will include representatives from Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Catawba Valley, Henderson Co., and Asheville Buncombe. Registration information will be sent in the coming days.

We would like to thank Velvet Scoggin for her service as a LWVNC director. Velvet is running for elected office in Onslow County so, as a candidate, she will be resigning her board position. Velvet has been instrumental in establishing and leading LWV in Onslow County and has worked with MALs and small League issues during her tenure on the LWVNC board. We appreciate Velvet’s energy and commitment to the organization and look forward to her continued involvement in the Onslow League.

Looking ahead, please plan to attend the LWVNC Council, which will be held via Zoom on May 20 and 21. Look for the registration link and more information about Council in the coming weeks. The event is open to all members; however, each League may send their president and one delegate, including one delegate from each MAL unit, as voting members.
