Visit us at the 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Birthday Commemoration Sunday, January 19, 2025 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM at the First Church Media 350  W State Street, Media PA.

Every year, Media Fellowship House and Media Area NAACP invite the community to our annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Commemoration to honor this American hero. For more than thirty years, we have partnered with various community groups to produce one of our area’s largest events.

In tribute to Dr. King's enduring legacy and his unwavering commitment to a world free of injustice, this year's commemoration will emphasize the importance of drawing lessons from our past to shape a more resilient future.

This year, the program focuses on systemic inequities in the juvenile justice system and the challenges faced by individuals reentering society after incarceration. Gregg Volz, JD, Director of Youth Courts & Instructor for Law & Justice at Harcum College, will deliver the keynote address.

Another part of the program is the 2025 MLK Spirit Hall of Fame Induction. The occasion will highlight the induction of three remarkable community leaders into the MLK Spirit Hall of Fame, recognizing their outstanding contributions to criminal justice and prison reform.

Inductees are:

  • Mary DeWitt and Paulette Carrington, artists and activists behind the Pardon Garden Project are to receive a MLK Spirit Hall of Fame Award. Mary has dedicated her career to amplifying the voices of women sentenced to life without parole in Pennsylvania. Paulette, sentenced to life without parole at 16, was released after a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling deemed such sentences for youth unconstitutional. She is a passionate advocate for prison reform and justice.

  • Jonathan Abdur-Rahim King, founder/CEO of Safe Corridors, is a dedicated community organizer and reentry professional from Chester, PA. Through his nonprofit, he ensures safe passage for school children, reduces violence across five school districts, and transforms communities by fostering safety, opportunity, and restoration.

This is a FREE event but registration is required. The Commemoration will be followed by a Community Dinner to be held downstairs in Fellowship Hall from 4:30-6pm.

NOTE: A suggested donation of $20/guest will help offset costs of the Community Meal.
