The League of Women Voters of Wake County (LWV-Wake) is sponsoring a Fair Maps Art Contest to raise awareness of fair voting maps (redistricting) in North Carolina. The contest is open to adult and teen artists in North Carolina working in two-dimensional media.  Winners in the teen and adult categories are eligible for cash prizes of $200 and $700, respectively.

Entries will be displayed in an online exhibition promoted by LWV-Wake and may also be highlighted in LWV-Wake’s print and digital media. Artists do not need to have prior knowledge of the issue of voting maps to be successful in the contest. LWV-Wake is providing educational materials to inspire their work.

North Carolina’s voting maps will be drawn in the next few months, and it is crucial that citizens are aware of the process and able to participate. The way that these maps are drawn can determine or strongly influence who gets elected, and therefore which laws get passed. We believe that art will be a powerful way to spread the word.

Due to the timing of when voting maps will be drawn, submissions will be accepted through Sept 1 via an online portal. The full contest rules and other information can be found at www.lwvwake.org/ArtContest
