We need you – and your neighbors – to take critical action today. Your state tax dollars fund the education that our local public schools provide to students in each district. NC legislators are in charge of how those tax dollars are distributed to your district. Public school funding has been insufficient in our state for decades – let your elected officials know that all students deserve a sound, basic education.

For the past 27 years, the Leandro legal case has outlined a plan to correct the problem once and for all. The Leandro Plan is ready to be funded by legislators, but your NC House Representatives and NC Senators need to hear from you before they vote on the budget.

Our state has unprecedented revenue available at this time, allowing funding of the Leandro Plan without raising taxes or impacting other vital state services. Providing a solid education for our students will generate increased revenues to the state for years.

Please forward this action alert to your friends and neighbors – and spread the word as you can via social media.

STEPS YOU CAN TAKE

Every Child NC, a statewide coalition that includes members of the League of Women Voters of North Carolina, has an easy interface you can use to contact your legislators.

1. Click on this "Take Action" link or copy and paste it into your browser. https://p2a.co/QqUq7ES

2. Enter your name, zip code, and other details as prompted.

3. Your NC legislators' email addresses will be automatically inserted into the email using your zip code.

4. Edit the email content that you see below, making it more personal. As a voter, mention the concerns you have about your local public school. If you work within the school system, have a child in the system, or are a student yourself, share an anecdote about the problems that exist, especially related to inadequate funding. If you are an administrator in the school district, tell your legislators about how your inability to have control over local school funding negatively impacts your school.

SAMPLE MESSAGE

Dear Representative/Senator:

As your constituent, I am writing to request that you take immediate action to allocate state funds in the NC Budget to meet the requirements of the Leandro Plan. Through the Leandro Plan, I want you to fund our local public schools to provide at least a sound, basic education for all of our students.

The children in my neighborhood are not achieving in school as they should be. Students have not been receiving a decent education for decades. It is time for you to fund our local schools so that all of our children can achieve success. Fund the Leandro Plan immediately and include it in the final state budget that is sent to Governor Cooper for his signature.

Our state has unprecedented revenue available at this time, allowing funding of the Leandro Plan without raising taxes or impacting other vital state services. Providing a good education for our public school students will generate increased revenues to the state for years. Having a trained and educated population will attract large and small businesses to all of North Carolina in a sustainable growth pattern for decades to come. Our future generations can have better lives because of your action today.

Respectfully,

Your Constituent [NAME]
