The Women’s Issues Action Team of LWV Charlotte Mecklenburg  is sponsoring a special pre-midterm speaking event on Zoom scheduled for Thursday, November 3 from 2-3:30 pm. Dr. Susan Roberts, political science professor at Davidson College, is the featured speaker on the topic of “The 2022 Midterm Election: Women Candidates, Women Voters, and Gender Stereotypes.”

An unprecedented number of women ran in primaries in 2022 for governorships and state legislators; however, this does not hold true for the U.S. House and Senate. Questions Dr. Roberts will explore include: What are the chief campaign issues of women who received the nomination of the major parties? Do they represent the characteristics traditionally associated with women candidates? What is the likely impact on women in elected office?

Dr. Roberts holds a Ph. D and M.A. from the University of Notre Dame and a BA from Wake Forest University. Her area of expertise is on U.S. and N.C. politics as well as reproductive rights. She teaches courses on Congress, the President, political parties and interest groups and public policy at Davidson. Audiences of radio and television are familiar with her commentation and frequent appearances on WFAE, WUNC, NC Public Radio, NPR, Spectrum TV and WSOC, WCNC, BBC and FOX 46.

She is a recent recipient of the Diane Blair Award presented biennially to a political scientist who played an outstanding role in political and/or government during their career.
