The LWV Catawba Valley will present a program featuring Judge Bob Orr, former North Carolina Supreme Court Justice. He will speak on "Redistricting and the Law.” There will be an opportunity for questions at the presentation. It will be held at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library in Hickory on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
Judge Orr's unique redistricting perspective comes from having served eight years on the NC Court of Appeals and ten years as a justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court, retiring in 2004. Judge Orr grew up in Hendersonville and is a UNC graduate.
Since July, the Catawba Valley League has promoted awareness of how district lines are created and how they impact voting. The League has focused on the U.S. Congressional District line that divides the City of Hickory and Catawba County into U.S. Districts 10 and 5.
A previous presentation in August included a panel from LWVNC (Phyllis Demko), Common Cause, the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, and the president of the NC NAACP.
The Sept. 13 event is free and open to the public. Because of a limited seating capacity, attendees are asked to register here for their free “tickets.” For those at a distance, the event will be livestreamed on the League’s Facebook page and on the website, lwvcv.org
