Join us on Friday, May 19, 2023 at Noon on Zoom for Hot Topic - The Court has Spoken on Pennsylvania School Funding: Now What? A panel of researchers and experts on the School Funding topic will discuss the consequences of the Court's decision that PA's school funding system is unconstitutional. They will share their perspectives as to how the governor and general assembly should address correcting the disparities that disadvantage so many of the Commonwealth's young people.

Panel Moderator: Joan Evelyn Duvall-Flynn Ed. D. Chair: Trauma Informed Education Coalition (TIEC)

The presenters will be:

  • Stephen Herzenberg, Executive Director, Keystone Research Center Stephen Herzenberg holds a Ph.D. in economics from MIT and has been Executive Director since December 1995 of Keystone Research Center (KRC). He is also the co-coordinator of the Reimagine Appalachia campaign . Steve has published widely on education, economic, and labor market issues, including on alternative ways Pennsylvania might raise revenues in equitable ways (e.g., through a more progressive income tax or a severance tax on natural gas). 

  • Susan Spicka, Executive Director, Education Voters of Pennsylvania whose mission is to ensure elected officials adopt and implement a pro-public education agenda. To that end, they advocate for sound education policy and build and mobilize the public to ensure that support for quality public education and an opportunity to learn for all children is a top priority for key decision makers. 

  • Michael Chuchill, an attorney with the Public Interest Law Center and is one of the lawyers representing the school districts, organizations and parents in the landmark case challenging Pennsylvania’s school funding system, Wm Penn SD, et al v. Pa Dept. of Education, et al.  He has also represented the League of Women Voters in litigation successfully challenging Pennsylvania’s congressional gerrymander in 2016. Mr. Churchill is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School.

  • Heather Bickley, Founder of Basic Kindness. Heather is an educator with experience in education, business, and nonprofit sectors.  The mission of Basic Kindness is to create awareness about food and housing insecurity by providing resources and support for individuals or groups to engage in meaningful and mutually rewarding exchanges through intentional acts of kindness. We are a community of kids and adults who want to bring more kindness into the world one act at a time.
