Hot Topics don’t get any hotter than this: Immigration Issues in SE Pennsylvania: The Big Picture will be presented on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 1:00 PM on Zoom. Please join the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Central Delaware County for this important program about the immigrants living among us.

Our speakers will be Steven Larin, the Deputy Director of Nationalities Service Center (NSC) and Exequiel (Zeke) Hernandez, Professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Steven Larin is an attorney specializing in removal defense, asylum, and immigrant youth issues. He leads NSC’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion program and has served as an Adjunct Professor for the Immigration Law Clinic at Temple University–Beasley School of Law and for the Political Science Department at La Salle University.

The Nationalities Service Center (NSC) states that they stand with immigrants and champion immigrants.  For over a century, NSC has empowered immigrants and refugees to thrive in our communities and pursue a just future. They provide comprehensive services and support including legal protections and remedies, health and wellness, education, and employment services and language access.

Each year NSC serves over 5,000 immigrants, refugees, and survivors in the Philadelphia region and beyond.

Professor Exequiel (Zeke) Hernandez  publishes pioneering research in two broad areas. In the first, he explores how immigration patterns affect the investment choices, strategic decisions, and performance of firms in foreign markets. Plus he researches the linkage between immigration and economic growth which has crucial implications for immigration policy.

His forthcoming book, The Truth About Immigration: Why Successful Societies Welcome Newcomers will be published June 4th from St. Martin's Press. It is available for pre-order now wherever books are sold. The book is an accessible, apolitical, and evidence-based look at how newcomers affect our local communities and our nation. It talks about the impact of immigrants on investment and job creation, and issues such as jobs, crime, and undocumented immigrants.

Moderator: Marilyn Gilroy - Member League of Women Voters of Central Delaware County, and Co-Chair of the Voter Registration/Information Team and our League Coordinator for our participation in the Delaware County Naturalization Ceremony.
