Every year, Media Fellowship House and Media Area NAACP invite the community to our annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Commemoration to honor this American hero. For more than thirty years, we have partnered with various community groups to produce one of our area’s largest events.
In tribute to Dr. King's enduring legacy and his unwavering commitment to a world free of injustice, this year's commemoration will emphasize the importance of drawing lessons from our past to shape a more resilient future. Jeannine Osayande, the founder/director of Dunya Performing Arts Company (DunyaPAC), will deliver the keynote address. The event will feature performances by dancers and drummers from DunyaPAC, along with vocalist Rev. Dr. Lisa Dennis.
Another part of the program is the 2024 MLK Spirit Hall of Fame Induction. Two remarkable community heroes will be inducted into the MLK Spirit Hall of Fame, recognizing their outstanding contributions to environmental and health justice. Inductees are:
- Zulene Mayfield a founding member of Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living (CRCQL), which leads education campaigns, assembes data on the consequences of incineration, working with local college campuses, and convincing suburban communities they too have a stake and responsibility in fighting for environmental justice.
- Christa Barfield, CEO of Farmer Jawn & Friends Foundation, is dedicated to enhancing access, education, and awareness to empower underserved communities in regenerative organic food production. A 128-acre working farm, FarmerJawn is the largest Black-woman owned regenerative organic produce farm in America.
This is a FREE event but registration is required. The Commemoration will be followed by a Community Dinner to be held downstairs in Fellowship Hall from 4:30-6pm. Please share this opportunity with your friends, family, and neighbors. Register HERE.
