The League of Women Voters of South Carolina has submitted proposed district maps to both the Senate and House Redistricting Subcommittees. Both bodies are now accepting maps from the public.

The Redistricting process is proceeding at a very slow pace. A recent editorial accurately observes that delays serve the interests of incumbents who don't want challengers and of those who don't want time for litigation to go forward and be resolved before the next election cycle begins.

Congressional, Senate, and House district maps proposed by the League of Women Voters are now available on our Redistricting page. A video recording of the September 29 event, which offers in-depth information about why and how maps were drawn, will be posted soon.

SC Senate update: October 8 is the deadline for submitting maps. The League has already submitted proposed Congressional and SC Senate maps.

SC House update: One public hearing remains on October 4. No plans to receive third party map submissions have been announced.

Columbia, SC - The League of Women Voters has been closely following the redistricting process in South Carolina and preparing our own maps for consideration by the SC Legislature.

Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day. Voting allows qualified citizens to have a say in who will represent them in local, state, and federal elections. Too many Americans cannot vote because they have not registered or kept their registration information current.

Voter registration is the first step. The League of Women Voters established National Voter Registration Day in 2012. It celebrates our democracy and promotes free and fair voter registration.

The House of Representatives has added a new meeting at which virtual testimony will be accepted. It is scheduled for Tuesday, September 28, at 4:30 PM. In-person, virtual, and written testimony will be accepted at this meeting.

The League of Women Voters will make its maps public on September 29 in a virtual Zoom-based event. This event is free and open to the public.

The Redistricting Subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee met today to discuss the guidelines and criteria to be used by the Senate and the process for third parties (such as the League of Women Voters and other organizations) to submit maps. House statewide hearings are not receiving the attendance that the Senate hearings did.

Redistricting SC 2021 continues in both houses. Initial Senate hearings have ended; third parties may submit maps by mid-September. The House has scheduled public hearings Sept. 8 - Oct. 4.

The ACLU of South Carolina is hiring a full-time, time-limited, attorney to assist organizations throughout South Carolina in their work towards a redistricting process that is as fair and transparent as possible.
