The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin hosted a conversation about how money and weak recusal rules are undermining our courts.  The second webinar of the League's Fair Courts series featured Prof. Edward Fallone, Lisa Graves and Jay Heck. The panel conversation was moderated by Joy Cardin, a retired Wisconsin Public Radio talk show host. 

Speakers:

Edward Fallone is an associate professor of law at Marquette University Law School. He ran for Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice in 2013 and 2020.  He founded three non-profit organizations serving the underprivileged in southeastern Wisconsin including a bilingual legal services provider.  He also served on the Board of Directors of Voces de la Frontera Action. 

Lisa Graves created True North Research and is its Executive Director and Editor-in-Chief.  From 2009 to 2017, she led the Center for Media and Democracy and is the President of its Board of Directors.  She testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Federal Courts in March of 2021 in a hearing titled, “What’s Wrong with the Supreme Court: The Big-Money Assault on Our Judiciary.” Lisa earned a J.D., cum laude, from Cornell Law School and a B.S., with the highest honors, in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Jay Heck is the Executive Director of Common Cause in Wisconsin. CC/WI is Wisconsin’s largest non-partisan citizens reform advocacy organization with more than 2,500 members.  He previously served as a top assistant to Wisconsin Majority Leader Joseph Strohl, Associate Director of the State Senate Majority Democratic Caucus, Legislative Director for Congressman Peter Kostmayer (D-PA), and on the national campaign staff of Independent Presidential candidate John Anderson (R-IL).  Heck graduated with honors from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with degrees in political science and history.
