This forum will discuss the issues impacting the upcoming elections on February 21 and April 4 for a new Wisconsin Supreme Court justice. Moderator Marjorie Schuett will lead discussions of the court’s structure, the impact of recent decisions on gerrymandering and voter rights, as well as what we can expect from the court in the future.
The League of Women Voters pays particular attention to Supreme Court cases that affect League positions and affect the general public, including prompt and equal treatment before the law for adults and juveniles, redistricting, prohibtion of dropboxes for voting, and more. Our speakers:
Christa Westerberg is a Partner with the firm’s Litigation Practice Group. While experienced in a variety of civil litigation, Westerberg concentrates her practice in environmental and land use law, as well as open government law. Westerberg frequently presents on environmental and open government issues. She is co-Vice President of the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council, and a board member of the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Administrative and Local Government Section. Westerberg graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Missouri summa cum laude and from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2002 cum laude. |
Robert Yablon is an Associate Professor of Law and Faculty Co-Director of the State Democracy Research Initiative. His research interests include political and election law, constitutional law, federal and state courts, and statutory interpretation. Yablon's recent publications have appeared in several law reviews. Yablon received his bachelor's degree in economics and political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his master's degree in social policy from the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He then earned his J.D. at Yale Law School, where he was an Articles Editor of the Yale Law Journal. Following law school, Yablon served as a law clerk for Judge William Fletcher of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and for U.S. Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor. |
Marjorie Schuett is a board member of the League of Women Voters Dane County. As a member of the Voter Service committee, she seeks out special events where the League can do voter outreach. She is looking forward to sitting in the sun again this summer at the Westside Community farmers’ market, helping people to get ready to vote in 2024. Schuett is retired from the practice of law and as a court official. She was in private practice in Madison for 20 years, was appointed as a Dane County court commissioner for 17 years and was elected four times as the City of Middleton municipal judge. She was president of the Dane County Bar Association, the Legal Association of Women Dane County and the State Bar Family Law section. She has also served on the boards of the Respite Center and the New Harvest Foundation. Schuett is both a Badger (University of Wisconsin Law School) and a Wolverine (University of Michigan BA). |
