Susan B. Anthony's Gift to You

Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906), whose 200th birthday will be celebrated on February 15th, was a passionate stalwart of social reform. She publicly advocated for temperance, abolition and women’s equality but is foremost remembered as a nationally recognized 19th-century leader and spokeswoman for women’s suffrage.

An uncompromising believer in universal suffrage, Anthony opposed the passage of the 14th and 15th Amendments because they failed to extend the vote to women of color. For decades, she used her voice and influence in defense of women’s inalienable right to vote. She did not live to witness the passage of the 19th Amendment but her life’s work empowered us with the vote.

In a week’s time, local Leagues across Wisconsin will hold “Women Power the Vote” Day of Action events to celebrate the League’s 100th birthday. These events will reflect on the decades-long fight led by women to secure their enfranchisement and ours. The League’s work is an outgrowth of their efforts and there is still much work to be done. Please seek out and attend a Day of Action event in your community by contacting your nearest local League.  If you can’t attend, please consider making a donation in support of their work in honor of Susan B. Anthony’s gift to all of us. And, in living memorial to her progressive deeds, vote on February 18th!

“Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.”
