Join the League of Women Voters of North and Central San Mateo County for an information session on one of the County Measures for the November election. The measure proposes changing the San Mateo County Charter to create an Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) for the County Supervisor Districts. Currently, redistricting, which occurs after national census data is released, is controlled by the Board of Supervisors.

The meeting will be a panel discussion among three speakers:

  • Kathy Wheeler, LWVNCSMC, will speak about county redistricting in California and how the proposal to change the County Charter originated.
  • Jim Lawrence, Chair of the 2021 San Mateo County Supervisorial District Lines Advisory Commission, will speak on the redistricting process in 2021 and how the current maps came to be.
  • Rosette Garcia, Vice-Chair of the 2021 San Diego County Independent Redistricting Commission, will speak about how the independent commission approach was used to create supervisorial maps in San Diego.

This is not a Pros & Cons session for the county measure. It is intended to give the audience background information on independent redistricting at the county level. There will be a Q&A  session at the end of the talks.
