Chicano! History of the Mexican-American Civil Rights Movement (1996)

Land, labor, educational reform, and political empowerment are the four themes of this documentary regarding the Mexican American civil rights movement from 1965 to 1975.

Episode 1, Quest for Homeland, examines the land grant movement in New Mexico in 1966 and 1967 and the fight to convince the federal government to honor the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848).   It then moves on to discuss Rodolfo (Corky) Gonzales and his founding of the Crusade for Justice in Denver in 1966.

Episode 2, The Struggle in the Fields, examines the fight organize farm workers in the central valley of California.

Episode 3, Taking Back the Schools, examines the Los Angeles high school blow outs of 1968.

Episode 4, Fighting for Political Power, examines the creation of La Raza Unida Party as a third party force for political power.

It succeeds where many documentaries fail in that the filmmakers were able to interview the actual participants in the events – Journal for MultiMedia History
