Black Lives Matter spurred protests around the US and the globe, mobilizing a rainbow coalition against police violence and racial disparities. But will it matter? And, if so, how? Daniel Gillion makes the case that demonstrations do affect elected officials, shape policy, increase engagement, and motivate voter turnout.

Daniel Gillion is the Julie Beren Platt and Marc E. Platt Presidential Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Among his publications is The Loud Minority: Why Protests Matter in American Democracy (Princeton University Press). Political Science associate professors Michael Minta (University of Minnesota) and Megan Ming Francis (University of Washington) also join us.
