LWV SHEBOYGAN COUNTY recently took action to jumpstart a community discussion on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). They hosted a DEI workshop for League members and the public. The workshop was facilitated by two well-respected community members, Rev. Lex Cade-White and Alexandra Nugent, both of whom have years of experience leading conversations on the topic. The program started with guidelines for communication and included audience participation. Attendees explored the intersectionality of their own identities and learned a variety of terminology crucial to creating more inclusive and safe spaces. “We would highly recommend that other Leagues work to host similar, local training on diversity, equity, and inclusion,” says Dominique Lee, student League member who attended the session and contributed to this write-up.

In reviewing how the League should consider diversity, equity and inclusion, LWVUS offers this guidance: “We know that by creating a vibrant climate of inclusiveness, we can more effectively leverage our resources to advance our collective capabilities.” Dominique believes in order to do this, "It is essential we learn how to foster its growth and better serve diverse communities with the goal of improving the League’s racial, age and economic diversity."
