2020 was a difficult year for many reasons. One aspect that came to light was the vastly different worlds Americans live in based on race, ethnicity and economic status. Eight minutes and 46 seconds was a lifetime for George Floyd and an awakening for many of us. We clearly saw that Black Americans have a strained relationship with law enforcement. Some of us learned that indigenous women and girls go missing at a higher rate than other groups in the US; that Hispanic citizens are targeted as undocumented.
These troubling times gave us pause to ask, what are our children learning in public education? What will they know about US history of inclusion, exclusion, and exploitation of various groups throughout US existence? We are fortunate to have the following professionals educate us on our Wisconsin education structure with regard to curriculum:
- Kris McDaniel, Social Studies Consultant, WI DPI
- Tom Clementi, Retired History and Humanities teacher from the Appleton Area School District
- Steve J. Harrison, Assistant Superintendent - Assessment, Curriculum, & Instruction of Appleton Area School District
