LWV Beloit, LWV Dane County and LWV Door County all strongly encourage local Leagues to participate in The Harvard Case Method Project. In 2015, Harvard Business School piloted the project, offering free training to high school history, government and civics teachers in case-based teaching. Leagues nominate teachers in their communities and the teachers present a case study in their classrooms and to the public with League sponsorship. The interactive teaching method highlights cases from key moments in U.S. history and encourages debate and problem-solving. Participating teachers report that case method teaching deepens students’ understanding of American democracy and promotes civic engagement.
"The case study method is a great way to learn history and gain appreciation of the complexity of the debates in our past,” said Mary Anglim, member of LWV Dane County.
In 2019, LWV Beloit sent two civics teachers to the program and LWV Dane County sponsored one. This year, LWV Beloit and LWV Door County will each support three teachers from area high schools to attend the training virtually.
The deadline to nominate teachers for this year's training is March 7, 2021 at 4 p.m. CST. You can send teachers’ names, email addresses and school affiliations to recruitment liaison Dr. Deirdre Kamlani of LWV Greenwich at civics [at] lwvgreenwich.org. This opportunity can be especially enriching for teachers from resource-challenged school districts in your area.
If you would like to experience the case study teaching method, please register for LWV Beloit’s case study program on civil rights, “Martin Luther King and Struggle for Black Voting Rights,” on March 13 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
