How one Anoka County city is approaching energy efficiency and renewable energy to reach sustainability goals

LWV ABC member and Coon Rapids resident, Lonni McCauley, will give a short presentation on the Coon Rapids Regenerative Energy Taskforce. Guest speakers Kari Rehrauer (Coon Rapids Ward 2 Councilmember) and Olivia Dorow Hovland (Coon Rapids Sustainability Planner) will present a program on the Coon Rapids Energy Action Plan recently approved by the city council. Co-Chairs of the Coon Rapids Sustainability Commission, Chris Backes and Kelsey Brodt, will also provide remarks.
Kari Rehrauer graduated from the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities with a bachelor’s in biology and a Master’s in Education. With a career that spanned 20 years as a licensed life and Earth science public school teacher, Kari has a deep commitment to the sciences and to environmental action. As a current Coon Rapids City Councilmember, Kari has a proven track record of working to mitigate climate and promote sustainability.
Olivia Dorow Hovland is the Sustainability Planner for the City of Coon Rapids. She has previously worked as a city planner and transportation planner. While with the City of Coon Rapids, she has developed and managed the Green Homes energy efficiency incentive program and helped create the City’s first Energy Action Plan. In 2021, Coon Rapids also became the first SolSmart solar-friendly certified city in Anoka County. She continues to work to advance sustainability in the city and serves as the staff liaison for the city’s Sustainability Commission.
