Woman helps young man register to vote

March 3, 2025 – The SAVE Act, which is expected to be introduced in Congress sometime in March, undermines elections and makes it difficult – if not impossible – for millions of eligible voters to register to vote and have their voices heard.

The SAVE Act would make it harder for N.C. citizens to register to vote. Already required to show a valid ID when casting a ballot, N.C. voters would need to meet more onerous identification requirements. And these new requisitions would burden military voters, tribal voters, rural voters, and millions of married women who have changed their names. In addition, the bill would make it harder for survivors of natural disasters, like those affected by Hurricane Helene, to vote.

It is unacceptable to incumber rural voters, voters of color, and older North Carolinians who are less likely to have an accessible birth certificate or hold a passport. Married women, who represent approximately two million voters in our state who have changed their names, do not have a birth certificate that matches their married name. Tribal citizens may not be able to use their tribal IDs as valid identification, and survivors of disasters like Hurricane Helene may have documentation that has been destroyed. Compared to white U.S. citizens, citizens of color are three times more likely to lack documents such as birth certificates, passports, naturalization certificates, or certificates of citizenship – or face difficulties accessing them.

It is important to contact your elected officials and ask them to oppose the SAVE Act. Click here to easily complete this action through a portal from LWVUS.

Additionally, the N.C. General Assembly is considering HB 127. This would limit the ability of organizations like the League of Women Voters to register voters. The N.C. State Board of Elections already has strict rules protecting voters' privacy during the registration process. LWV members are all trained in the laws and procedures governing registering citizens. Organizations like the League play an essential role in helping North Carolinians vote.

This bill would prevent Leagues from:

  • helping citizens register to vote
  • assisting incarcerated voters
  • working with high schools to register or pre-register young voters
  • making sure that college students are registered at their correct address

Please contact your state legislators and ask them to vote no on HB 127.
