Protecting the Vote in North Carolina

Resources for voters, eletion observers and League members

The League of Women Voters of North Carolina works year-round to protect every eligible voter’s freedom to cast a ballot safely and have that ballot counted. We monitor election administration, educate voters about their rights, identify barriers to voting and work with nonpartisan partners to respond when problems arise.

During the 2026 General Election, LWVNC members are helping monitor voting conditions across North Carolina through our Early Voting Site Observer Corps and County Board of Elections Monitoring programs.

Early Voting Site Observer Corps

Help LWVNC monitor voting conditions across North Carolina.

During Early Voting and on Election Day, LWVNC is asking local Leagues and trained volunteers to conduct brief, mobile observations of voting sites. These visits help us identify potential problems, document conditions across the state and connect voters with assistance when needed.

Observers are looking for conditions such as:

  • Unusually long lines, including lines for curbside voting
  • Problems that may be affecting voters’ ability to enter or use a voting site
  • Police, ICE, Department of Justice or other unusual official presence
  • Possible violations of electioneering or polling-place perimeter rules
  • Other circumstances that may interfere with voters’ ability to cast a ballot

Observers do not intervene, confront individuals or attempt to resolve problems themselves. If a voter needs assistance or a situation requires immediate attention, contact the nonpartisan Election Protection Hotline at 888-OUR-VOTE (888-687-8683). Observers should then submit an LWVNC report documenting what they saw.

SUBMIT AN OBSERVATION REPORT

Please submit a report for every site visit, even when no problems are observed.

Know Your Rights & Protect the Vote

North Carolina Election Interference Law Handbook — Brennan Center for Justice
This is especially valuable because it is North Carolina-specific and was published in June 2026. It covers federal and state laws related to election interference, voter intimidation, federal presence, election materials and election administration.

Federal Agents at the Polls: Know Your Rights — ACLU
Definitely keep. It's a relatively accessible public-facing explanation of voters' rights and federal presence at polling places, updated for 2026.
