Where has our year gone? We are preparing to wrap up the year with annual meetings. Many things have been accomplished, and many challenges remain ahead.
Our most important work for the upcoming year is to ensure that all eligible voters can participate in a fair election without their voices being suppressed. We need your League to be diligent in making sure voting is safe, accessible, and free in your areas. Watch how things are being handled and let us know if something seems off. The BallotTrax system that became familiar in 2020 will be utilized again for the upcoming election by the N.C. State Board of Elections. Make sure your community members are empowered to vote. Absentee ballots remain an option that many voters will use, and they can check to make sure their ballots are received by the local Board of Elections. Be vigilant in this election. We are seeing safe and fair elections being threatened. Remember, we are the watchdogs of our government!
LWVNC has launched a new webpage dedicated to civics education resources. You can see what other Leagues are doing in North Carolina to promote citizen participation in our government and use existing programs as a jumping off point to develop your own initiatives, whether they are for students or adults. As we know, a healthy democratic government depends on public engagement!
Regarding the speculation that the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade, we must speak out about our human rights to make our own choices – that is what we are about! If you didn’t read the State Board’s editorial published in the News & Observer, please check it out. Keep raising your voices. The government should not interfere in an individual’s bodily autonomy.
We must continue to apply pressure regarding the education of our children here in North Carolina. Speak to your legislators about fully funding the Leandro plan. Education is a top priority for North Carolina’s people, but our legislators are not reflecting that. Our system is under attack with reduction in staffing, materials, and many other things. You have received many action alerts with suggestions (and they can be viewed on LWVNC’s website) – make it happen!
