Dear Members and Friends of the League,

League members across the country were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Deborah Turner, LWVUS president. She was such a charismatic and energetic leader, and her profound absence will be felt in so many ways.

I first met Dr. Turner when she graciously attended the 75th Anniversary celebration of the Orange, Durham, Chatham League in September 2022. I was immediately taken by her warmth and down to earth manner.

She spoke to the ODC audience about her upbringing and how discrimination first affected her in college. (I encourage you to watch her remarks on YouTube.) But it was clear that her strength of character overcame any obstacles in her way. She won over a cadre of college friends who were lifelong, many of whom attended her recent wedding.

She also graciously attended our Convention this past spring in Charlotte, inspiring the crowd in an evening keynote address by urging us to redouble efforts in the midst of threats to democracy and attacks on individuals’ rights. But she also quietly sat and witnessed the less glamorous parts of our Convention during the day, mingling with League members during our breaks.

Dr. Turner’s commitment to the principles of the League was evident. It was clear in every Zoom session, every interaction, and every meeting that she valued our work and appreciated the contributions of every member.

She will truly be missed, and I count myself extremely fortunate to have met and worked with her these past two years. We should all carry a part of her with us as we strive to achieve the League goals that she valued so much.

Best,

Jennifer McMillan Rubin
LWVNC President
