The League of Women Voters of North Carolina Virtual Book Club continues with its second discussion, hosted by the Election of the President Action Team.
This session will feature Let the People Pick the President: The Case for Abolishing the Electoral College by Jesse Wegman. Wegman is a member of the New York Times Editorial Board and a Senior Fellow in the Office of the President at the Brennan Center for Justice. The book is available in hardcover, paperback, e-book, audiobook, and through the North Carolina Digital Library.
The discussion will explore the history of the Electoral College, beginning with the 1787 Constitutional Convention, and examine how the United States ended up with an indirect election for its one national office that has resulted in the candidate in second-place for the popular vote becoming the president five times in the nation's history, twice in this century. It chronicles the various attempts to reform the way the president gets elected and supports the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact as a way to make sure every vote is relevant in every presidential election.
