LWVNC Public Education LAT joins with Tax Policy Review Committee to address Public School Funding
League members have identified critical areas needed to support NC Public Education in the recent survey. The LWVNC Public Education LAT, partnering with the Tax Policy Review Committee, will conduct a caucus to inform members about these important public policy issues and to organize a path forward for research and advocacy.
North Carolina's public education system is in a crisis due to chronic underfunding and recent legislative tax policies.
- Current Funding Status: North Carolina ranks 48th in per pupil funding and 49th in state funding effort, despite a strong economy. Teacher salaries are low, ranking 38th for average salary and 42nd for beginning salary, contributing to teacher shortages.
- Revenue Sources and Tax Policy: The state's education budget heavily relies on taxes, with individual income tax and local property taxes being major contributors. Recent tax cuts for both individual and corporate taxes are reducing available revenue, increasing competition for funds and potentially raising property taxes.
- Impact of Policy Changes: Lowering income taxes and expanding Opportunity Scholarships are further straining the underfunded public education system If you are concerned about the state of public education in North Carolina, please attend one of the caucuses that will be conducted in conjunction with the 2025 LWVNC Convention:
1) Tuesday, April 29,5:30 - 6:30 8PM, via Zoom; or
2) Saturday, May 5, 7:30 – 8:15 AM at the convention
