Meet Our Students' Needs

On June 20, the Governor signed into law what the Wisconsin Public Education Network is calling "the largest stand-alone voucher aid expansion in state history."

This legislation fails to meet the needs of Wisconsin's public school students, leaving them behind in favor of private voucher school funding, which will see a large increase in per-student state aid while the average public school will receive an increase lower than the rate of inflation.  The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin is calling on lawmakers and the Governor to correct this issue in the budget and meet the needs of public school students.  There is no greater investment for the future of Wisconsin than our public schools.

Our students deserve better. We need to call on lawmakers to fix this budget before it is too late, and call on Gov. Evers to veto the entire budget if it is not fixed. Learn more about the budget from Wisconsin Public Education Network.

Better Bill For Early Literacy Instruction

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin (LWVWI) supports improvement in reading instruction. The members of the legislative committee have given careful consideration to Senate Bill 329 and the companion Assembly Bill 321 and decided to oppose it.

This bill contains troubling aspects, primarily it gives the legislature more control over public instruction in the form of a literacy council (whose majority is appointed by the legislature) and has punitive language. LWVWI wishes to be able to support a revised bill leading to successful implementation of an early literacy program focusing on the science of reading.

The LWVWI Legislative Committee has written out its main concerns in a  full statement here. We urge your to contact your lawmakers and ask for a revised bill.
